TEFAF Maastricht—The World’s Greatest Fine Art and Antiques Fair
Staff Writer

From March 13-23, 2003, Maastricht, the oldest town in the Netherlands, will once again host TEFAF Maastricht, which has come to be recognized as the greatest art and antiques fair in the world. “TEFAF” stands for The European Fine Art Fair. Each year, the event features 200 of the world’s most reputable art and antique dealers from as many as 13 countries. The quality and rarity of the treasures that these dealers bring to TEFAF in turn attracts more than 75,000 of the world’s most affluent private collectors, in addition buyers from leading museums and cultural institutions looking to purchase Old Masters, contemporary art, jewelry, antiques, rare books and other collectibles.

Collectors visiting TEFAF Maastricht can buy with peace of mind, knowing that every object for sale has been examined by a team of over 120 international specialists for quality, authenticity and condition. TEFAF’s vetting process is second to none. The accuracy of each piece’s description is checked, and provenance is verified against the Art Loss Register.

The fair covers approximately 90,000 square feet, and is truly spectacular in size and beauty. TEFAF’s magnitude offers collectors the opportunity to explore a wide assortment of art and antiques. The fair is divided into several sections that focus on particular areas of interest.

The section Paintings Drawings and Prints has a long-standing reputation for displaying some of the finest Dutch and Flemish Old Masters as well as major French, Italian and Spanish masters. The Antiques and Works of Art section is the largest and most diverse. It offers something for everyone, such as furniture, garden statuary, 18th century jewelry and silver, medieval woodcarvings, early pewter, and fine porcelain. Collectors of modern works will want to visit the 20th Century Art section, which provides some of the highest quality paintings, drawings and sculptures by leading European and American artists. Classical Antiquities & Egyptian Works of Art contains a wonderful selection of important works from the Ancient World. For collectors of written works, such as decorated medieval manuscripts, rare books, and 20th century autograph letters, they will find the Illuminated Manuscripts, Rare Books and Maps section truly fascinating. Finally, collectors of modern jewelry will likely be attracted to the smaller, yet exquisitely beautiful section La Haute Joaillerie du Monde.

Chubb, for third year in a row, is the principal sponsor of TEFAF. Chubb selected this sponsorship to demonstrate its dedication to the fine arts and its collector clients. “The fair helps transmit a broader message about Chubb’s approach and expertise,” said John Sims, European manager for Masterpiece®. “For those serious about art, this is the fair to attend each year.”
